A Catalan Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) will travel to Colombia to monitor the second round of the presidential elections, scheduled for 21 June. The initiative is part of the work of the Taula Catalana per la Pau i els Drets Humans a Colòmbia, of which ICIP is a member.

The mission is composed of 27 people, including members of the Parliament of Catalonia, representatives of local governments, and members of Catalan civil society organisations working on human rights and peace in Colombia. It also includes Antoni Vicens, Delegate of the Government of Catalonia to the Andean Countries, and Javier Calderón, representative of the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation (ACCD) in Colombia.

The objective of the EOM is to contribute to strengthening guarantees for political participation in the electoral process through human rights-based electoral observation, support to social actors, and engagement with Colombian and international institutions. The mission will be carried out in accordance with United Nations international standards for electoral observation.

The initiative builds on the mission deployed in 2022, also promoted from Catalonia, with the participation of institutional representatives, local authorities, and civil society actors.

This time, the EOM will be deployed across several regions of the country (Apartadó, Barrancabermeja, Cali, Cúcuta, Montes de María, and Popayán) in order to cover diverse regional realities of the electoral process.

Following election day, on 22 June, the mission will present a preliminary report in Bogotá with key findings and recommendations aimed at improving electoral safeguards and political rights, with a human rights and gender perspective.
