As part of the Setmana del Llibre en Catal\u00e0<\/a> (Catalan Book Week), the conference ‘Let’s talk about violence’ will take place on September 9, in which the book ‘Sobre la viol\u00e8ncia<\/a>‘ by Hannah Arendt, published by ICIP and Angle Editorial, will be presented in the collection “Classics of Peace and Nonviolence<\/a>“, together with ‘Matrioixques’, by Marta Carnicero (Quaderns Crema).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session will address the forms and rhetoric of power and violence exercised in different circumstances and reflect on nonviolence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event will be presented by the writer Esteve Plantada and Gerard Rosich, who has translated Arendt’s title into Catalan. Lorena Fuster and Marta Carnicero will also take part. The event will take place on Friday, September 9 at 5.30 pm, at Moll de la Fusta in Barcelona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About violence<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written amid the Cold War and the demonstrations of May 1968, ‘Sobre la viol\u00e8ncia’ reflects the relationships between war, politics, violence and power. Arend writes from a historical perspective, with the background of the totalitarian experiments of the 20th century that escalated the use of violence to an unprecedented intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considered one of the most influential political thinkers of the 20th century, Arendt – of Jewish origin – fled Germany in 1933 and, after a few years as a stateless person in Paris, emigrated to the United States, where she worked as a teacher in several universities. Although she refused to be classified as a philosopher due to her independent thinking and conception of political freedom, Arendt plays a central role in contemporary philosophical debates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book, published for the first time in Catalan in 2011 in the collection “Classics of Peace and Nonviolence”, has been republished this year following the new, renewed image of the collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
