It is<strong> toxic polarization<\/strong>, a dynamic in which different positions are belittled and delegitimized: &#8220;others&#8221; are seen as &#8220;enemies&#8221;, and there is no place for dialogue, debate and confrontation of constructive ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dealing with toxic polarization is a challenge as a society because it affects coexistence, cohesion and democratic culture<\/strong>. Toxic polarization impairs political and social debates, generates political disaffection and can lead to violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The animated audiovisual \u201c<strong>Risks of toxic polarization: how to deal with it<\/strong>\u201d, made by the ICIP and <a href=\"http:\/\/intuitivofilms.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Intuitivo Films<\/a>, warns about this harmful dynamic and exposes some tools we have at our disposal to avoid it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Risks of toxic polarization: how to deal with it\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2BXG_jvZQRg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Symptoms of toxic polarization<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Categorical, simplistic and <strong>nuanced approache<\/strong>s &#8211; reducing debates to black or white &#8211; indicate toxic polarization. But so are the <strong>use of belligerent language<\/strong> &#8211; calling people who think differently &#8220;enemies&#8221; or &#8220;traitors&#8221;, for example &#8211; <strong>the appeal to feelings<\/strong> rather than arguments, <strong>the absence of self-criticism<\/strong> and exclusionary thinking &#8211; be with me or against me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"578\" src=\"http:\/\/www.icip.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Barranc-1024x578.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36070\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.icip.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Barranc-1024x578.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.icip.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Barranc-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.icip.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Barranc-768x434.png 768w, https:\/\/www.icip.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Barranc-1536x867.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.icip.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Barranc-2048x1156.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tools to deal with it<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dialogue is the main tool to prevent or redirect conflicts: political dialogue at an institutional level and social dialogue in all spheres of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on this premise, increasing the <strong>ability to listen and dialogue<\/strong> with people who think differently is key to reducing toxic polarization.
