Throughout her talks in Barcelona, Gilmore addressed the structural limitations of the penal system and advocated for abolition as a collective practice focused on repairing harm and building more just, supportive, and violence-free societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sunday, May 25 \u2013 Literal Fair<\/strong><br>Under the title <em>\u201cAbolishing the Punishment Industry: Challenges and Political Practices for Emancipation,\u201d<\/em> the first session took place at the Literal Fair and was facilitated by researcher Ainhoa Nadia Douhaibi. Gilmore presented some of the core ideas of her work, such as the notion of abolition as \u201cemancipation in rehearsal\u201d\u2014a constant process of creating spaces of freedom and transformative relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also analysed what she calls the \u201cprison industrial complex,\u201d highlighting how the penal system efficiently organises state resources (land, labour, capital, and authority) to contain populations and reproduce inequality. This model prioritises repression and punishment over essential services, especially in contexts marked by austerity and budget cuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Gilmore, freedom is a place built collectively, and abolitionist work is not only about eliminating prisons but about creating real, sustainable alternatives rooted in care, community accountability, and restorative justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Abolir la ind\u00fastria del c\u00e0stig: reptes i pr\u00e0ctiques pol\u00edtiques per a l\u2019emancipaci\u00f3\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KN97LghMyMM?start=1299&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Monday, May 26 \u2013 La Model<\/strong><br>The second gathering took place in the auditorium of <em>La Model<\/em>, a venue with deep symbolic significance. Under the title <em>\u201cSecurity and Justice: Alternative Models to Punitive Systems,\u201d<\/em> the session was facilitated by Afrofeminist activist Basha Changue and featured contributions from \u00c1urea Mart\u00edn (Tanquem els CIE), I\u00f1aki Rivera (University of Barcelona), and criminal lawyer Laia Serra. ICIP director Kristian Herbolzheimer and the Ombudswoman of Catalonia, Esther Gim\u00e9nez-Salinas, officially opened the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gilmore emphasized that abolition is a model\u2014not a distant horizon\u2014and advocated for a grassroots internationalism that connects diverse struggles and fosters solidarity among people and collectives resisting across the world. She outlined three imperatives for abolition: it must be green (sustainable), red (against racial capitalism), and internationalist (connected and plural).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the dialogue, participants also reflected on the challenges and contradictions of using legal tools strategically within abolitionist movements, highlighting that collective responses to violence must go beyond punishment and promote community-based approaches to conflict resolution and healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Seguretat i just\u00edcia: models alternatius al punitivisme | Amb Ruth Wilson Gilmore a La Model\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oZFXQgXZfzo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A vision rooted in community and transformation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With a trajectory that bridges academia and activism, Ruth Wilson Gilmore is a co-founder of collectives such as <em>Critical Resistance<\/em> and <em>INCITE!<\/em>, and the author of works like <em>Golden Gulag<\/em> and <em>Abolition Geography<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her visit to Barcelona, organised by the ICIP\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icip.cat\/en\/alternatives-to-security\/\">Alternatives for Security<\/a> programme, offered a unique opportunity to open spaces for collective reflection on how to rethink security, justice, and freedom from a transformative, non-punitive, and community-rooted perspective.
