On 27 May, the Hub Social in Barcelona will host the conversation No War No Kings: Rethinking Power and Peace in Times of Conflict, the first public event organised by BCN4Peace, the new alliance promoted by ICIP, the Centre Delàs d’Estudis per la Pau and NOVACT, with the support of the Ajuntament de Barcelona.

The event will bring together two leading international voices in peacebuilding, civil rights advocacy and democratic resistance: Iranian peace strategist Sanam Naraghi-Anderlini and Berkeley professor john a. powell.

Naraghi-Anderlini has recently spoken out about the human cost of the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran, taking a critical stance both against war and against the Iranian regime. With more than 25 years of experience working in conflict zones, she contributed to the drafting of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security and leads ICAN, a network active in more than 40 countries.

Meanwhile, john a. powell is one of the most influential intellectual figures in debates on polarisation, racism and democracy in the United States. His work on bridging (building connections between divided communities) has influenced movements such as Black Lives Matter and a range of democratic resistance spaces confronting the rise of authoritarianism.

The conversation will reflect on how to build peace and democratic resistance in a global context shaped by armed conflict, polarisation and the rise of authoritarian leadership.
