El Hip Hop com a eina de construcció de pau. Hip Hop as a Tool for Peacebuilding. Barcelona: International Catalana Institute for Peace, 2025

The book Hip Hop as a Tool for Peacebuilding, by educator and dancer Sandra Jurado Rey, offers a rigorous and contextualised perspective on how hip-hop culture can contribute to social transformation, community cohesion, and peace education. It combines a theoretical framework with an analysis of concrete experiences in Catalonia and across Spain, such as those of the collectives Hip Hop Works, Versembrant, Asociación Garaje, Contorno Urbano, and Vintiquatreset. Through this exploration, the author reflects on hip hop’s potential to create spaces for youth empowerment, the transmission of values, active participation, and collective resistance.

The publication highlights hip hop’s commitment to peace and reclaims its community-based and countercultural roots. Jurado also emphasises the importance of engaging with this urban culture through respect and knowledge, warning against the risks of instrumentalisation and trivialisation that many initiatives face.

With an educational and accessible approach, the book is designed as a helpful resource for professionals working in the social, cultural, and community sectors, inviting readers to reconsider the role of the arts and urban expression in building more just societies.

This is the 32nd volume in the Tools for Peace, Security and Justice collection, which provides resources for individuals and organisations committed to peacebuilding. All publications are available in digital format on the ICIP website (in Catalan).
