Coinciding with the eleventh edition of the Cities Defending Human Rights program, ICIP, the Human Rights Institute of Catalonia (IDHC) and Casa Amèrica Catalunya have organized a conference held on 15 September at 5 pm.

The event “Defending Human Rights: What are we learning from the pandemic?” will address issues such as the new strategies adopted by human rights defenders in the adverse scenario for human rights caused by the global Covid-19 crisis and the conclusions that can draw from the experiences of this period.

Human rights defenders will discuss their experiences in the current pandemic period; what strategies they are developing in the face of the ineffectiveness or unwillingness of governments to protect them and safeguard their causes; and what their conclusions are and how they see the immediate future of their work in their respective contexts.

The conference will take place in the auditorium of Casa Amèrica Catalunya, with in-person and virtual presentations.

The coordinator of Amnesty International Catalunya, Adriana Ribas, will moderate this conversation with human rights defenders from different countries worldwide.

Participants include:

Ruth Mumbi (Kenya), defender of women’s rights and the right to a dignified life

Manal Tamimi (Palestine), defender of the right to peace and the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association

Susana de la Cruz (Mexico), Indigenous activist from Chiapas, founder of the Association of Prisoners’ Families in Struggle

Marta Nin, director of Casa Amèrica Catalunya, will welcome the event, and David Bondia, president of the Human Rights Institute of Catalonia, will present the conference.  Xavier Masllorens, president of the International Catalan Institute for Peace, will close the session.
